The Winsome Collection by Camilla d’Antoine is a curated collection of rare and other-wordly hand coloured lantern slides, restored and transformed into large scale photographic artworks. The lantern slide has its origins in 17th century optical viewing devices which came to be known as “magic lanterns.” The earliest slides for magic lanterns consisted of hand-painted images on glass, projected by itinerant showmen to amuse their audiences. The rarer lantern slides were sent to specialist who hand coloured the slides with pigment washes. These images are up to 150 years old and reveal astonishing moments in our past from ancient Egypt to the picturesque Scottish lochs, all somehow managing a contemporary aesthetic through their composition and colouring.
